I really enjoyed looking through composers’ tweets this week. I do not have a personal Twitter account, so it was interesting to see how people promote their compositions. I followed singers and authors including Jack Johnson, Judah and the Lion, Khalid, Rupi Kaur, and Lisa Genova. These composers all have different brands which I saw through their tweets.
Judah and the Lion (one of my favorite bands) writes music that incorporates numerous genres. They aim to produce music that comes from their hearts and strive to be themselves in everything they do. This authentic brand can be seen on their Twitter account. Their pinned tweet is a letter that they wrote to their fans (who they call their family) about the meaning of one of their songs. This letter is personal and raw, which expresses their brand of being authentic and staying true to themselves.

I can tell that the band is being authentic on Twitter by how vulnerable their tweets are and how they call their fan base their family. Through other tweets, the band promotes their current tour. They post photos from every show, which excites their followers for the tour. They use many photos and graphics in their tweets, which I think helps engage the audience. Also, providing links to their compositions helps spread awareness of their music.
Poet Rupi Kaur also expresses her brand through her tweets. Her poems are simple yet have deep meanings. She writes about things such as equality, sexual abuse, and rejection. Like Judah and the Lion, Rupi Kaur aims to be authentic and transparent with her audience. Similar to her poems, Kaur’s tweets are simple and use all lower-case letters. Her bio on Twitter is also simple, only saying “author. performer of poems.” This shows the author staying true to her brand and staying consistent in her writing. As well, she posts photos for each book tour, which helps engage the audience. She truly seems to care about her audience, and I can see this easily through her Twitter account.

After reading tweets from numerous composers, I have learned helpful tips for social media promotion. I will incorporate these ideas in my promotion for project 2.
